Dry Needling

Trigger Point Dry NeedlingDry needling is a technique that uses a thin needle to penetrate the skin and reduce pain by stimulating trigger points. It can lead to improvement of activity by managing pain and dysfunctions within skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue, and decreasing damages of body structure and function.Trigger point dry needling is done to accomplish one of the following:

  • Verify a clinical diagnosis by reducing the patient’s pain or nerve entrapment symptoms
  • Reduce pain in an acute condition
  • Loosen the patient’s trigger points for hours or days

There are different sizes of needles that are used, which depend on the area that is being worked on. The needles are very small and are not felt as they insert the skin. They range from .14 mm x 15 mm to .30 mm x 75 mm.After the treatment, you should expect to see a decrease in pain and symptoms and an increase in range of motion. Patients are often sore after the treatment for a few hours to a couple days, which can be relieved by icing and stretching the area that was treated. What conditions can dry needling assist?
